This unit focuses on the major theoretical and applied aspects of the role of government and the public sector in a market economy. Whilst the unit focuses upon Australia, and hence a federal system of government, many of the topics include international analysis, comparisons and examples. The unit identifies important, topical public sector issues that necessitate government intervention and policies. The unit covers key, selected aspects of the expenditure (including optimal resource allocation and ensuing decision-making) and revenue-raising (taxation) roles of government. The stabilisation role of government (macroeconomics) is not covered in this unit. -- Course Website
